A Racial Reckoning for College Access in America

"For the third time in two decades, the Supreme Court will hear a case involving the consideration of race in college admission decisions. By deciding to consider the combined complaints against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina so soon after Fisher v. University of Texas, and amid a racial reckoning following the murder of George Floyd and other Black Americans, the Court appears to be speeding down a busy highway in the wrong direction," according to an op-ed in Forbes

..."These recent headlines come on the heels of a report issued by my own organization, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), in conjunction with the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), to assess admission and financial aid practices through a racial equity lens. The report firmly states that we are nowhere near a time when we can exclude a student’s race as we make admission decisions. Undoing the ability of admission offices to consider race as a factor assumes we have reached a post-racial society where race no longer has a limiting impact on opportunity.
