NCES First Look Report Provides Glimpse at 2014-15 Changes in Cost of Attendance Components

Yesterday the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released a "First Look" report presenting preliminary data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System’s (IPEDS) fall 2014 collection on postsecondary institutions and price of attendance in 2014-15; degrees and other awards conferred: 2013-14; and 12-month enrollment in 2013-14. Below are selected findings from each area.

Institutional Characteristics, Cost of Attendance (in constant 2014-15 dollars), and Tuition and Fees

  • Average tuition and fees for full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates from 2012-13 to 2014-15 increased three percent at public and nonprofit four-year institutions and decreased two percent at for-profit, four-year institutions
  • The largest changes from 2012-13 to 2014-15 were seen in books and supplies, which decreased at private for-profit, four-year institutions by 17.3 percent and increased at private, for-profit, less-than-two-year institutions by 30.6 percent
  • Overall tuition and fees and room and board increased from 2012-13 to 2014-15, whereas other expenses allowances were down one to three percent during the same period
  • Other significant cost of attendance changes during this time period appeared at private, nonprofit, less-than-two-year institutions, which increased the amount of tuition and required fees by 13.8 percent, and books and supplies by 17.2 percent
  • In 2014-15, 42.4 percent of Title IV institutions in the United States and other U.S. jurisdictions were classified as four-year institutions, 29.5 percent were two-year institutions, and 28.1 percent were less-than-two-year institutions

Completions: 2013-14

  • Of students receiving bachelor's degrees from four-year Title IV institutions, 63.2 percent were at public institutions; 29.3 percent were at private, nonprofit; and 7.5 percent were at private, for-profit
  • Of students receiving associate degrees from two-year, Title IV institutions, 90.7 percent were at public institutions; .9 percent were at private, nonprofits; and 8.3 percent were at private, for-profit institutions

12-Month Enrollment 2013-14

  • Approximately 86.6 percent of students were undergraduates
  • Approximately 13.7 percent of students were graduate students

Provisional data for this collection, containing fully reviewed, edited, and imputed data, will be released approximately 3 months after the preliminary data. Final data, including revisions to the provisional data submitted by institutions after the close of data collection, will be available during the next collection year (2015-16).
