Schools Without GE Programs Being Dinged for Not Reporting GE

Many schools, believing that they have no Title IV-eligible programs that are subject to gainful employment (GE) rules, were surprised this week to receive communications from the Department of Education (ED) citing their failure to report gainful employment (GE) data. In many cases, this is due to a school’s incorrect reporting to COD.
The email was targeted to schools that have not reported on GE programs to NSLDS, yet have reported originations or disbursements of loans in COD in the 2014-15 award year for a certificate program at a private or public non-profit school or any program at a for-profit school, since such programs qualify as GE programs.
To check which program(s) triggered the GE letter from ED, go the the GE Program Tracking List page under the ORG tab in NSLDS. This page provides a listing of the GE programs at the institution, per ED records, and whether the institution has reported to NSLDS the required GE information for the program.
Some schools are seeing non-GE programs listed on the GE Program Tracking List because at some point they reported originations or disbursements incorrectly to COD. In such cases, the program tracking list will indicate “Source COD” as yes and “Source GE” as no. Even if you did not get one of the recent “missing data” letters, you should run the GE program tracking list to make sure there are no misclassified programs, or programs with incorrect credential level information. If a program is misclassified, you can update it on the GE Program Tracking page. Instructions on how to do so begin on page 35 of the NSLDS Gainful Employment User Guide.
Since the letter from ED was triggered by information reported by the school in COD, you should also correct the credential level information for the program in COD.
Correcting both NSLDS and COD should resolve the issue.

Our GE Tracker data suggested that we had submitted COD records for specific years, CIP codes, and credential levels for years that we didn't have any T-IV aid recipients in those programs. When I asked [email protected] about one of these examples for 2008-09, they replied that: “COD data is back-filled from information you reported with the origination and/or disbursement of loans in award year 2014-2015, so it is possible that you did not offer a program with that CIP code/credential level combination in award year 2008-2009.”

Correct the credential level of the individual record of the student incorrectly reported to COD. I had to fix 2.
