Candi Frazier
Senior Associate Director
West Virginia University
(Morgantown, West Virginia)

Candi FrazierMeet Candi Frazier, senior associate director of Financial Aid and Student Employment at West Virginia University, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Frazier's career in financial aid started with a work-study position in the summer of 1987, after she told her financial aid counselor she needed a job that kept her busy. "I was hired to do data entry using the old key punch card machines," Frazier said. "My how times have changed. I would imagine that very few people in aid today even know what a key punch machine is." In previous years, Frazier has served on NASFAA's Graduate and Professional Issues Committee, including a stint as committee chair. She has also served as chair of NASFAA's Public Service Loan Forgiveness Task Force.

Glad I did it but wouldn’t do it again: Build a house – way too stressful.

What’s on your desk right now? FISAP and A133 Audit information. To assist with those efforts, I also have Tylenol and two sets of readers – my eyesight seems to change every day.

What was the best thing that happened to you this past week? This didn’t happen last week, but a few weeks ago I had a student from New Jersey who graduated a few years ago stop by the office to catch up before heading off to graduate school in the northern part of the state. It really meant a lot that I had impacted his life so much that he felt necessary to update me on his life.

Superpower I’d like to have: Ability to fly. I hate driving.

One thing I would like to change about the current financial aid system is: I like keeping things simple, so I would like to see one grant, one loan, one work program.

Can’t live without: Google, Post-it notes and a mechanical pencil. Those who are close to me know that I am very Type A.

Guilty pleasure: Moose Tracks ice cream or donuts.

How my friends describe me: I think they would say that I am caring and giving… almost to a fault.

My idea of a perfect day: Sitting on a quiet riverbank doing absolutely nothing.

What NASFAA service/product is most helpful to you? AskRegs. Also, I can’t say enough about NASFAA staff members Karen McCarthy, David Futrell, and Megan McClean – they are experts and always very helpful.

My most motivating financial aid experience was: Serving on MASFAA’s Program Committee early in my career. It really motivated me to want to stay involved. It has paid high dividends personally and professionally.

My favorite thing about my job is: The work is challenging and always changing. You can always find something to improve. Since I am a first-generation student, it is also very rewarding to be a part of helping a student obtain his or her educational goals.

I've known Candi most of my career and she has always been a good friend and colleague. I spent some of my early years working on the keypunch machine and would agree that we've come a long way!!!
