NEWS FROM NASFAA

NASFAA submitted comments to the Department of Education (ED) Friday in response to its plans to hold one set of negotiated rulemaking sessions beginning in January 2019 to debate a host of regulatory issues including state reauthorization, the definition of a credit hour, accreditation, TEACH grants, faith-based entities, and innovative learning models, among others. NASFAA wrote to ED that it was concerned about the number and complexity of the topics to be debated and urged ED to instead create multiple negotiating committees. NASFAA also pushed ED to improve the administrative process for documenting TEACH grant requirements to avoid situations in which they are converted into loans, and to recognize states' efforts in establishing comparable national standards for interstate offering of distance education, among other issues. The agreement includes a $100 increase to the maximum Pell Grant (to $6,195) and expanded FAFSA data-sharing language. The House and Senate are expected to pass the package in the coming days, which will be by the start of the fiscal year, October 1, marking the first on-time passage of education funding in over two decades.

SOE 20th

Today is Constitution Day and many of you are conducting the required Constitution Day activities.  But we often find during Standards of Excellence or Consumer Information Assessment Reviews that schools do not document those activities. Our review teams recommend schools document activities as proof of compliance during an audit or program review. Want to find out what a confidential review would reveal at your school?
