ED Signs Contract for Student Loan Servicing Platform

The Department of Education (ED) on Wednesday signed a five-year $577 million contract with Accenture Financial Services to build a single student loan servicing platform—part of the Next Generation Financial Services Environment the agency has promoted as a way to modernize and streamline students' experience with the federal financial aid application, disbursement, and repayment. ED is also soliciting other contractors to build different aspects of the servicing platform, such as payment processing and call center functions, POLITICO reported. ED hit a roadblock with its student loan servicing platform solicitation, after several servicers filed a lawsuit taking issue with contract terms ED changed after they submitted proposals. ED subsequently issued a new solicitation in January.

House Education Committee Announces 5 Hearings to Inform HEA Reauthorization Bill

The House education committee—spearheaded by Reps. Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Virginia Foxx (R-NC)—announced Thursday that it would be holding five bipartisan hearings to inform its bill to reauthorize the Higher Education Act (HEA). The hearings will focus on the cost of college, strengthening accountability, non-completion, the role of community colleges and minority-serving institutions, and innovation. “Through regular order and a collaborative process, the committee will consider a comprehensive Higher Education Act reauthorization that puts a quality and affordable higher education within reach for every student,” Scott said in a press release. “...I look forward to working with Dr. Foxx and all members of the committee to produce legislation that addresses the complex and wide-ranging challenges facing students, families, and institutions.” The committee also said that it was inviting members of the public to email the committee if they wish to submit evidence “to be considered during the committee’s work.”
