NEWS FROM NASFAA

The Department of Education has announced changes to the processing of professional judgment (PJ) requests for students who have also been selected for verification. While the financial aid office must first complete verification to ensure the correct information is used for the PJ request, the office can make the adjustment on the same transaction. It is also not required to verify information that will be removed due to the PJ request. Also, using PJ does not require the aid office to verify a student’s application if he was not already selected for verification by the Department of Education or your school. The changes can be found on page AVG-1 of the 2020-21 FSA Handbook.

According to guidance NASFAA has received from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), in the situation where a school's cost of attendance (COA) changes after the student has been packaged (such as a mid-year tuition or fee increase), an institution may, but is not required to, update the COA and repackage the student. View the full answer to this question to learn more and search for answers to your other pressing regulatory and compliance questions, in NASFAA's AskRegs Knowledgebase.

x - FEDERAL REGISTER

The U.S. Department of Education has developed an application for HBCUs to seek a deferment of a Program loan under the CARES Act. This application will allow a Program participant to request the deferment and submit information for the Department's required report to Congress regarding its use of its CARES Act authority to grant the deferments.
