NEWS FROM NASFAA

In light of the ongoing pandemic, NASFAA last month held its second virtual Advocacy Pipeline event, during which three NASFAA members all hailing from Michigan met with congressional staffers representing lawmakers from the Great Lakes State, in an effort to have the financial aid community continue participating in direct advocacy despite the limitations brought on by the coronavirus.

In a panel discussion previewing President-elect Joe Biden’s incoming administration, a group of conservative education policy experts discussed what sort of issues they should be spearheading to influence impending changes to federal education policy. The wide-ranging conversation, hosted by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) on Wednesday, highlighted the gamut of education policy, covering both K-12 and higher education issues, and in what ways conservatives should look to influence and engage in policy debate.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

The Department of Education (ED) announced that the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020–24 Strategic Plan was finalized and published at StudentAid.gov/strategicplan. The Higher Education Amendments of 1998 established the U.S. Department of Education office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) as the federal government’s first performance-based organization (PBO). The PBO legislation directs ED to publish a new strategic plan every five years to illustrate how we will modernize the delivery of the federal student aid programs and identify steps necessary to achieve our strategic goals.
