NEWS FROM NASFAA

Congressional Democrats on Thursday formally unveiled President Joe Biden’s sweeping legislative package that would overhaul the U.S. immigration system and offer a pathway to citizenship for individuals enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 includes language from previous versions of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act proposed by Sens. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and would provide an expedited pathway to citizenship for those currently enrolled in the DACA program.

Our members across the country are continuing Financial Aid Awareness Month strong by hosting events and campaigns to help engage with students. This week, Emory University hosted a series of virtual events for students, including a meet-and-greet with the aid office and a FAFSA Help Day. Meanwhile, Western Governors University posted FAFSA trivia on Twitter and Mid Michigan College encouraged students to reach out to the aid office for help. How is your office spreading awareness about financial aid? Be sure to keep NASFAA in the loop by tagging us in your social media posts and using the hashtag #FinAidFeb, and enter our raffle for the chance to win a coffee treat for your office!

Reminder: NASFAA Survey on CARES Act Policy Implications

NASFAA, NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education), and MDRC recently sent a survey to primary contacts at NASFAA member institutions to evaluate programs developed to distribute Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act emergency aid funds and identify overarching federal- and institutional-level policy implications of these programs. Data collected in this survey will be used to produce public reports authored by NASFAA, NASPA, and MDRC and published on NASFAA’s website. Please submit your responses by midnight ET on Friday, February 26.
