NEWS FROM NASFAA

Sarah Baumhoff

Meet Sarah Baumhoff. Now approaching her 25th year working in financial aid, Sarah said she credits her start to the profession to a work-study job in junior college that helped her complete her postsecondary education and led to a career where she never finds herself bored. "Every time I talk to somebody new, or we bring somebody new on staff, I always tell them that you'll never be bored because something is constantly changing or being tweaked or being clarified," Sarah said. "You always have something new to learn, and I feel like that every day."

The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) sent an email to 2020-21 FAFSA filers with an expected family contribution (EFC) of zero in early April to alert them of expanded eligibility rules for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The communication was required by law as part of the expanded SNAP eligibility requirements and detailed the parameters of the program to students and how they can apply.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Created as part of NASFAA U's Fundamentals of Student Financial Aid online course curriculum, NASFAA recently published a video that covers the steps a student must go through to complete and submit a FAFSA through the myStudentAid mobile app. We encourage you to share this video with prospective and current college students who need help applying for federal financial aid, to link to it from your financial aid website, and to incorporate it into future financial aid night presentations.

It's a busy time for financial aid offices across the country, with the spring semester wrapping up and summer and fall terms quickly approaching. Refresh your skills and join your colleagues by sector to share lessons learned from the spring and how to best approach aid delivery and student services for the summer and beyond. The next "Let's Talk" sessions, hosted by Blue Icon Advisors, start on May 27. Spaces are limited — register now.

This four-week interactive online course, beginning July 6, will focus on the fundamentals of financial aid including applying financial aid concepts, categories and types of financial aid, the Title IV aid programs, other federal sources of student assistance, and comparing financial aid offers. Upon passing the course, you will receive a NASFAA U Certificate. Register now.
