As conversations surrounding student loan debt and the current benefit on student loan suspensions approaches another end date, new data is shedding light on how the financial landscape is broadening the wage gap for Black college graduates. A new report conducted by researchers at Student Loan Hero utilized census data to demonstrate the disparate impact student loans are having on Black borrowers and utilized state reporting to further pinpoint the national trends.

Two pieces of legislation recently reintroduced are hoping to provide graduate students who received the federal Pell Grant as undergraduates the ability to apply remaining semesters of Pell eligibility towards their graduate degree. One of the bills, a bipartisan proposal from Reps. Annie McLane Kuster (D-N.H.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Kim Schrier (D-Wash.), and Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), remains similar to its previous version. Students would have had to have received at least one semester of Pell Grant during their undergraduate studies and not have reached their lifetime limit of 12 semesters to be eligible to use the grant for graduate studies. 

The Department of Education (ED) on Monday posted a report notifying institutions of higher education of the approved awards for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and Federal Work-Study (FWS) programs for the 2021–22 award year. The report includes each school’s OPEID, name, address, state code, and federal funds authorized for the FSEOG and FWS programs as of June 15, 2021.

On Thursday, July 22 at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT, John Burton Advocates for Youth (JBAY) — a nonprofit that works throughout California to improve the quality of life for youth who have been in foster care or homeless — will be hosting a free webinar exploring the impact of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards and policies on financial aid receipt and enrollment of first-year Pell Grant recipients attending a California Community College. Specific attention will be paid to the impact on students of color and those with experience in foster care. The webinar will also introduce federal, state, and institutional-level recommendations, including those currently adopted at postsecondary institutions across California, to increase equity and remove barriers to student success.
