Major changes are coming to the FAFSA that will significantly impact students’ access to federal Pell Grants. The changes, as part of the FAFSA Simplification Act, which was passed into law as part of a federal coronavirus relief package in late 2020, will simplify the FAFSA and make it easier for students to access federal financial aid. In a new report examining how the changes will impact Pell Grant recipients, the Urban Institute found that the share of students receiving the grant will increase slightly from 42% to 45% and the average offer amount will remain unchanged at roughly $3,900.
