NEWS FROM NASFAA

A provision in the new infrastructure package currently making its way through Congress would rescind more than $350 million in unused money from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). The $353.4 million of unobligated balances from the HEERF represents less than 1% of the total funding allocated for higher education institutions in the HEERF created by multiple federal coronavirus relief packages.

The Department of Education (ED) in a federal register notice, announced that it would be reopening the application process for proprietary schools to apply for Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) grants through September 10, 2021. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with institutions needing to submit both the new American Rescue Plan (ARP) applications, along with the Required Proprietary Institution Certification (RPIC) form for supplemental ARP awards.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA's Implicit Bias Toolkit aims to help financial aid offices establish a neutral basis from which to build policies and deploy procedures in the administration of financial aid. NASFAA members are encouraged to use this toolkit as a jumping off point to examine current processes — such as how they develop financial aid forms, communications, cost of attendance policies, scholarship policies, and more — and make changes where needed to better serve all current and prospective students.
