NEWS FROM NASFAA

Thousands of current and former active-duty military service members will retroactively see their student loan interest waived, the Department of Education (ED) announced late last week. Through data matching with the Department of Defense, service members will not be required to take any action to receive the recently announced benefit. Prior to this automation, service members had to make individual requests for the benefit and provide additional information confirming their eligibility.

On Monday, NASFAA and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) submitted joint comments to the Department of Education (ED) on its proposed revision to the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) annual data collection form, which will be due in early 2022 for the Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2021 reporting period. The updated form requests significant disaggregation of data, which the two groups noted would be especially burdensome or impossible for some institutions to provide without creating new processes or systems. NASFAA also cited data from its CARES Act evaluation project to point out questions requiring clarification to ensure data integrity.
