NEWS FROM NASFAA

In response to the pandemic’s impact on student enrollment in higher education the College Board is aiming to reduce barriers by making a financial aid application free to students with family incomes under $100,000 as a way of ensuring that working families do not miss out on available financial aid. The CSS Profile — which approximately 300 colleges, universities, and scholarship organizations nationwide ask students to complete as a supplement to information provided on the FAFSA, in order to award non-federal financial aid — would become available at the start of the 2022-23 application cycle and be updated from previous iterations to include further simplification to the application.

NASFAA joined a group of higher education associations in a community letter to the chair and ranking member of the Senate Committee on Finance urging them to repeal the taxability of Pell Grants in the fiscal year 2022 reconciliation process. The letter comes after the House Ways and Means Committee included such a provision in its portion of the Build Back Better Act currently making its way through Congress. “Repealing the taxability of Pell Grant aid would permit low-income students to retain more of this critical financial aid to cover the cost of college,” reads the letter addressed to Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho). Further, pointing to support from the community for increasing the maximum Pell Grant award, the letter notes repealing the taxability of the aid will “magnify the positive impact for low-income students.” The Senate is set to take up the reconciliation package in the coming days.
