NEWS FROM NASFAA

NASFAA submitted comments Friday to the Department of Education (ED) in response to a recent request for information on Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program administration. In the letter, NASFAA shared results of a recent survey of financial aid administrators which raised concerns about PSLF outreach, publicity, and communication being inadequate and identified several areas of the process that are most difficult to navigate. NASFAA urged the secretary of education to examine whether the same authority ED secretaries have used to alter terms and conditions of loans in the past can now be used to broaden PSLF, explaining that long-term fixes will likely require congressional action, but in the meantime the administration can and should “provide public service loan forgiveness regardless of where the loans were held.”

Yes, but not necessarily to every term or payment period within the 2021-22 award year. The R2T4 waiver and CARES Act withdrawal benefits (cancellation of Direct Loan disbursements, restoration of Federal Pell Grant lifetime eligibility used, etc.) apply to students who begin attendance in, and subsequently withdraw from, the payment period that includes the end date of the COVID-19 national emergency.
