NEWS FROM NASFAA

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of past NASFAA National Chair and friend Marvin Carmichael. Marvin spent over four decades at his alma mater, Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and a master’s degree in administration and supervision. He implemented his studies to become highlighly influential in developing state and national student financial aid policy, legislation, and funding. He went on to work for his institution’s office of student financial aid in 1973 and served as Clemson’s director of student financial aid for 35 years.

Parent PLUS loans are again receiving scrutiny following a recent report from The Wall Street Journal detailing how some institutions of higher education are promoting the loans as an option to parents to finance their child’s higher education pursuits. The use of these types of loans has become more prevalent in recent years, though they have come with increased skepticism as the number of families taking out Parent PLUS loans has resulted in parents now borrowing more than undergraduates take out in loans, according to the news outlet’s analysis of federal data.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

We need your great ideas for engaging, relevant, and interesting conference sessions. All types of session proposals are welcome, from those focused on advocacy, training, and professional development, to sessions structured as open-forum discussions. We urge you to construct your session proposal with an eye toward inclusion, ensuring speakers from all different backgrounds — particularly those from marginalized groups — are represented. All proposals must be received by Sunday, October 31, 2021. Visit our Presenters and Moderators page to submit a proposal.

NASFAA's Blue Icon Advisors hosts Let's Talk events to give you the opportunity to engage with peers, learn from presenters and each other, share information, and discuss best practices. Join us at either 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. ET tomorrow, October 21 to discuss what schools should be applying with R2T4s for modular enrollments — October is the perfect time! There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

As the new award year begins, schools need to update their financial aid policies and procedures to reflect new rules and processes. Have you updated your P&Ps yet? The NASFAA P&P Builder guides you, step by step, through the creation of a centralized and accessible policies and procedures manual. Plus, if you need a hand inputting your data, Blue Icon can help evaluate the current state of your P&Ps and help you write new ones specific to your institution.
