NEWS FROM NASFAA

Richard Cordray, the chief operating officer of Federal Student Aid (FSA), on Wednesday testified before the House Education and Labor Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment, where members sought out answers concerning pressing updates on the office’s sprawling student loan servicing system. The conversation covered issues surrounding federal financial aid and servicing, including the return to repayment for federal student loan borrowers, the recent announcements about changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, and the monitoring and oversight of predatory institutions.

Higher education stakeholders continued to provide public comment concerning the “90/10 loophole” during the Department of Education’s (ED) negotiated rulemaking public hearing on Wednesday. Those who spoke, including student advocates and policy experts, urged the department to ensure that regulatory changes best benefit students. During the public hearing, NASFAA Policy Analyst Jill Desjean provided testimony aiming to highlight the ways in which ED should work to ensure students are protected during the impending regulatory changes and that unintended consequences are averted.

People go to college and pursue undergraduate degrees for a multitude of reasons. While many may think future earnings are the driving force, findings from Strada’s national survey show money is just one of the many factors motivating students. Strada’s 2021 national alumni survey, released Wednesday, includes responses from 3,309 alumni who completed their undergraduate degrees in the past 20 years and attempts to underscore the value of an undergraduate degree at a time when enrollment is shrinking and students' perception of the value of a degree is shifting.
