NEWS FROM NASFAA

Despite what appeared to be broad support among Democratic lawmakers in Congress, tuition-free community college failed to get across the finish line and was ultimately cut from the Democrats’ social spending package, raising the question of whether a national free community college program — a core component of the Democratic Party's education ambitions — will ever get enacted.

In an executive order announced on Monday, the White House is taking steps to improve government interactions with student loan borrowers and the financing of their higher education goals. In total, the administration is directing 17 federal agencies to implement 36 customer experience changes, including modernizing programs, reducing administrative burdens, and piloting new online tools and technologies to streamline processes for recipients of government services.

Stay tuned to Today's News in the coming weeks to learn more about the 2021-22 class.

NASFAA leadership believes there is inherent value in building and maintaining communities within our larger membership, and in leading and facilitating community conversations. In the past, we've utilized various tools and platforms to engage our members (or subset of members). This is a new role at NASFAA, and a new strategic focus, so identifying and connecting with the key communities is step one. Once key communities are identified, the Community Manager would work to surface information gaps, fill those gaps, and nurture the communities into active, engaged subsets of the membership. Interested applicants should apply by Dec. 31, 2021 for full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

As the landscapes of financial aid and higher education continue to shift, financial aid professionals have been expected to adapt to shifting needs. Part of this change includes taking on new responsibilities such as university enrollment management. Financial aid administrators now need to understand the strategic role that their operation plays at the institution. The Strategic Enrollment Management Pathway at the 2022 Leadership & Legislative Conference & Expo will help experienced aid administrators learn strategies in conjunction with institutional enrollment goals and facilitate conversations and in-depth peer discussions. Register today to save your spot. Early bird pricing ends Friday, December 17.

Tune in tomorrow to hear directly from members of NASFAA's policy team as they cover the latest updates on what's happening in Washington related to student aid policy. They will provide updates on topics including student aid funding, regulatory action, and close with a question-and-answer session. Register today.
