NEWS FROM NASFAA

As the calendar winds down on 2021, the Department of Education (ED) has published a pair of reports detailing key metrics and performance standards in an effort to keep stakeholders informed on how the agency is approaching its portfolio for the upcoming fiscal year.

Following months of review and discussion by NASFAA's Association Governance Committee and legal counsel, the association's Board of Directors voted on November 16 to share proposed edits to the NASFAA Bylaws with members for a 30-day comment period, as required. Bylaws are the legally binding rules that outline how the board of our association will operate. Periodically reviewing Bylaws against changing best practices and processes is recommended; the last time these Bylaws were comprehensively reviewed was 2012-13. We present two documents for your review — a redlined copy of the proposed updates to the Bylaws of NASFAA, and a summary document with explanatory text related to the updates. Please review these documents and share your feedback with NASFAA before Dec. 31, 2021.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA is looking for a student to fill a 12-week paid internship with its Policy and Federal Relations staff. The intern will help develop advocacy materials; attend and report on hearings, events, and meetings; analyze and summarize legislation and regulations; and much more. Those students studying in fields related to higher education, public policy, political science, and history may benefit most from this internship. If you know graduate or undergraduate students who may be interested, please encourage them to apply. This internship is supported by the Dallas Martin Endowment for Public Policy and Student Aid. Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, to be considered.

In fall 2021 NASFAA was awarded grant funding to evaluate stimulus emergency grants. This work is a continuation of the report NASFAA published in August 2021, An Evaluation of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act Funding for Postsecondary Institutions, and is being done in partnership with NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and HCM Strategists. As part of this project NASFAA established a working group of members at minority-serving and historically black institutions to advise and inform our work on this project. This working group, comprised of 14 NASFAA members, includes 12 (86%) who have never served on a task force or working group prior. Read more about the working group's scope of work in its charter.
