NEWS FROM NASFAA

This week on "Off The Cuff," Justin is joined by NASFAA’s Vice President of Professional Development & Institutional Compliance Dana Kelly and Shannon Crossland, senior director of student financial aid & scholarships at Texas Tech University. The group discusses Shannon’s career path in financial aid and how administrators can develop and advance in the profession. Shannon shares insight into what skills are valuable as a financial aid director and Dana details the various NASFAA offerings to help administrators develop and grow in the field. Owen wraps up the podcast with a news rundown covering Congress’ end of year activity and a brief recap from the recently completed negotiated rulemaking committee on student loans and affordability.

With little fanfare, the Senate cleared the Responsible Education Mitigating Options and Technical Extensions (REMOTE) Act, a bipartisan measure seeking to ensure student veterans retain access to higher education benefits. The bill is aimed at making key technical improvements to the Isakson-Roe Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act and includes changes to help institutions satisfy the Isakson-Roe bill’s consumer information requirements by using the College Financing Plan template and ensures student veterans can continue to receive their education benefits, in addition to extending some coronavirus-related flexibilities previously granted to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) amid the pandemic.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Nominations and Elections Committee is pleased to announce the 2022-23 slate for National Chair-Elect and Representatives-at-Large to the NASFAA Board of Directors. Voting representatives at NASFAA member institutions will receive an invitation by email to cast their vote online in January. Learn more about the candidates by reading through each person's statement of candidacy and resume. Winners will be announced in February and would officially take office in July 2022. Thanks to all who nominated candidates and/or agreed to run for NASFAA office.

In early December, negotiators met for the Department of Education's (ED) final negotiated rulemaking sessions of the year, which focused on affordability and student loans. Their final day, negotiators reached consensus on four of 12 topics: total and permanent disability discharge, eliminating interest capitalization for nonstatutory capitalization events, false certification discharge, and Pell Grant eligibility for Prison Education Programs. Check out the Congressional Research Service's "Prisoners’ Eligibility for Pell Grants: Issues for Congress" report, which is linked in the Ref Desk under the Pell Grant Publications, Articles & Other Resources section, to read up on Pell eligibility issues for prisoners, and check out this month's release notes for a look at some other helpful, timely references in the Ref Desk.
