NEWS FROM NASFAA

NASFAA continued to adapt in a world upended by the coronavirus pandemic in its policy, research, and advocacy efforts in 2021. By continuing to hold virtual events, such as the Advocacy Pipeline with Capitol Hill staffers, the policy and federal relations team made strides in influencing key policy decisions regarding college access, affordability, simplification, transparency, and federal aid for higher education institutions and students amid the pandemic. NASFAA engaged in several advocacy, grant-funded, and public policy undertakings to support its mission of promoting programs that remove financial barriers and ensure student access to postsecondary education.

Following months of review and discussion by NASFAA's Association Governance Committee and legal counsel, the association's Board of Directors voted on November 16 to share proposed edits to the NASFAA Bylaws with members for a 30-day comment period, as required. Bylaws are the legally binding rules that outline how the board of our association will operate. Periodically reviewing Bylaws against changing best practices and processes is recommended; the last time these Bylaws were comprehensively reviewed was 2012-13. We present two documents for your review — a redlined copy of the proposed updates to the Bylaws of NASFAA, and a summary document with explanatory text related to the updates. Please review these documents and share your feedback with NASFAA before Dec. 31, 2021.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA leadership believes there is inherent value in building and maintaining communities within our larger membership, and in leading and facilitating community conversations. In the past, we've utilized various tools and platforms to engage our members (or subset of members). This is a new role at NASFAA, and a new strategic focus, so identifying and connecting with the key communities is step one. Once key communities are identified, the Community Manager would work to surface information gaps, fill those gaps, and nurture the communities into active, engaged subsets of the membership. Interested applicants should apply by Dec. 31, 2021 for full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

NASFAA's certification and credentialing program is expanding our roster of volunteers who have strong knowledge and experience administering Title IV aid. As a test development volunteer, you would serve as a subject matter expert on various projects designed to maintain the quality and validity of our tests and exams. We're also looking for volunteers to help with our test preparation program. Most projects are short in duration and can be completed through a combination of web meetings and independent work. NASFAA membership is required. Interested? Complete this form to let us know.

NASFAA U's Fundamentals of Student Financial Aid online course begins Jan. 11, 2022 and will focus on the fundamentals of financial aid, including applying, financial aid concepts, categories and types of financial aid, the Title IV aid programs, other federal sources of student assistance, and comparing financial aid offers.
