Dozens of lawmakers in a recent letter to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are urging the agency to issue guidance regarding eligibility requirements for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that provides clarity to certain exemptions that existed before the onset of the pandemic and expanded eligibility for the federal program.

A group of congressional Democrats have unveiled legislation that would aim to provide targeted relief to student loan borrowers’ credit history. The legislation, dubbed the Clean Slate Through Consolidation Act, would remove default records from the credit history of federal student loan borrowers who have consolidated their defaulted loan. The measure, endorsed by NASFAA, is similar to a pair of previously introduced bills, which have also been endorsed by NASFAA, that seek to remedy financial strains caused by student loan defaults. “Student debt continues to remain a serious impediment for those aspiring to pursue higher education. It shouldn’t have to be that way,” said Rep. Alma Adams (D-N.C.), founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, and an original cosponsor of the bill. “Education is empowerment, and we should continue to pursue policies which empower students.”
