NEWS FROM NASFAA

The Department of Education (ED) on Wednesday awarded $198 million in Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds III (HEERF III) created under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to assist students at 244 colleges and universities and provide resources to those institutions to help them recover from the pandemic.

After two cycles of concerning FAFSA completion numbers, the class of 2022 has returned to near pre-pandemic norms with 52.1% of the senior class completing the application. The latest dataset compiled by the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) found that through July 1, 2022, high school FAFSA completions rose 4.6% year-over-year, representing roughly 92,000 additional applications.

The top Republican lawmakers on the House and Senate education committees are calling on the Department of Education (ED) to extend the comment period for its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that was unveiled on Wednesday. In a letter penned by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), ranking member of the House Education and Labor committee, and Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) committee, the pair called on ED to extend the comment period by an additional 30 days. They also allege that the regulatory changes overstep the agency’s authority and usurp the “power of the purse” entrusted to Congress.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

For more than two decades, NASFAA has produced a benchmarking report on the earnings of financial aid administrators and how financial aid offices (FAO) with similar characteristics are staffed. This task force is charged with determining what changes are needed to NASFAA's Benchmarking Survey and Report to ensure they are collecting the most relevant and important information for FAOs, information in a way that acknowledges changing work environments, and presenting survey results to NASFAA membership in a way that assists with daily work, staff, and salary needs. This task force is comprised of 15 financial aid administrators from all six regions and every institutional sector. Five of these members represent minority-serving institutions, and for 60% it will be their first time serving on a NASFAA task force. Read more about their work in the task force charter and explore other volunteer opportunities.
