NEWS FROM NASFAA

The Department of Education (ED) on Wednesday unveiled an official notice detailing its authority to carry out President Joe Biden’s student loan debt cancellation plan.

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.), chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, chairwoman of the House Committee on Appropriations, spoke about President Joe Biden's student loan debt relief, other legislation aimed at student loan debt, and the future of higher education after Biden's relief is implemented at an event hosted by the Center of American Progress on Wednesday.

NASFAA has joined the higher education community in urging member institutions to review their institutional policies regarding transcript and enrollment holds, and to be prepared to explain how they determined the policies were effective and fair. The call to action follows heightened scrutiny of the practice of transcript withholding and comes on the heels of a recent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) report detailing improper blanket transcript withholding policies. “The CFPB findings and possible enforcement actions are likely to affect a large number of institutions,” the letter spearheaded by the American Council on Education (ACE) explains. “Given the widespread use of tuition payment plans across campuses, the CFPB findings will have a broad impact across higher education.” NASFAA and the signatories committed to work with institutions to make progress on this issue to ensure that all students are served fairly and effectively.

Borrowers must submit the PSLF Help Tool and, for Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) borrowers, apply for loan consolidation by October 31 to qualify for the waivers. NASFAA is a proud partner of the PSLF Coalition, a nonprofit effort that works with other nonprofits, unions, and government agencies to spread the word about PSLF. Two free webinars are being offered by pslf.nyc and pslf.us: today, Thursday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. ET (register) and next Wednesday, October 19 at 2:30 p.m. ET (register). Please share this information widely.

We need your great ideas for engaging, relevant, and interesting conference sessions. All types of session proposals are welcome, from those focused on advocacy, training, and professional development, to sessions structured as open-forum discussions. We urge you to construct your session proposal with an eye toward inclusion, ensuring speakers from different backgrounds — particularly those from marginalized groups — are represented. All proposals must be received by October 31, 2022. Visit our Presenters and Moderators page to submit a proposal.

Yesterday’s FAFSA Update webinar had higher than anticipated interest; we apologize to those that were unable to attend live due to capacity constraints. The webinar is available on-demand!  You can watch NASFAA's Norma Robinson and Eunice Powell review key aspects of the application process, address updates to the FAFSA application (including those made as a result of the FAFSA Simplification Act) and, discuss answers to frequently asked questions.
