The Department of Education (ED) on Tuesday unveiled a forthcoming Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for an overhaul of income-driven repayment (IDR), with top department officials detailing additional accountability efforts being rolled out as a part of its regulatory agenda.

In this monthly round-up in Today's News, we would like to highlight what is going on in your state and regional financial aid administrator associations. This month, we have the opportunity to hear from our colleagues from EASFAA and WASFAA.

On Monday, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) was selected by her colleagues to helm the gavel on the House Education and Labor Committee. Prior to the midterm election Foxx, who has previously served as chair of the Education and the Workforce Committee — the name Republicans have typically given to the committee — highlighted that the GOP higher education agenda would focus on student loan reform and new requirements for financial aid offers.

NASFAA's 2023 Leadership & Legislative Conference & Expo is just around the corner, but there's still time to register and take advantage of the informative and practical session offerings, including an update on FAFSA simplification from the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Tuesday's morning general session will feature Melanie Storey, deputy director of policy implementation and oversight at the Office of Federal Student Aid. During the session, Melanie will discuss current happenings at ED, with an emphasis on significant upcoming federal methodology and FAFSA changes. Be sure to check out our resources to justify your attendance at this year's conference, and register soon to secure your seat!

NASFAA is looking for a student to fill a 12-week paid internship with its Policy and Federal Relations staff. The intern will help develop advocacy materials; attend and report on hearings, events, and meetings; analyze and summarize legislation and regulations; and much more. Those students studying in fields related to higher education, public policy, political science, and history may benefit most from this internship. If you know graduate or undergraduate students who may be interested, please encourage them to apply. This internship is supported by the Dallas Martin Endowment for Public Policy and Student Aid. Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, to be considered.

Qualify to attend the FAAC Forum in February by getting certified during the upcoming testing window that runs Wednesday, January 11-25, 2023. If your application has already been approved, purchase the certification knowledge exam and schedule your session online. If you haven’t applied yet, complete your application online now. NASFAA reached a new milestone: more than 30,000 professional credentials have been awarded since the program began in 2013! It took five years to reach the first 10,000, and less than half as long to double that number in 2020. Congratulations to every one of the over 8,800 individuals who hold at least one professional credential, and the more than 250 who have earned all 17 credentials. Your commitment and dedication are inspiring!
