NEWS FROM NASFAA

The Department of Education (ED) on Thursday announced that it will hold virtual public hearings on April 11, 12, and 13 from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET for stakeholder feedback. Following the public hearings, ED states it will finalize the issues to be addressed through rulemaking, and nominations will be sent out to non-federal negotiators who can serve on the negotiated rulemaking committees that will convene in fall 2023. The topics covered during the hearings include third-party servicers, return of Title IV funds, cash management to address disbursement of student funds, federal TRIO programs, and more. 

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Under the FAFSA Simplification Act, effective with the 2024-25 award year, only the following forms of untaxed income that are included on the federal tax return will be included on the FAFSA and in the federal need analysis/calculation of the student aid index (SAI) for Title IV federal student aid funds: untaxed portions of Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA, or Individual Retirement Account) distributions (withdrawals); untaxed portions of pension and annuity distributions (withdrawals); IRA deductions and payments to self-employed SEP, SIMPLE, and qualified plans; tax-exempt interest; and Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. NASFAA is seeking volunteers to participate in the NASFAA Choir for the 2023 Opening Session in San Diego. If you are planning to attend the conference, and would like to lend your voice to the National Anthem and another vocal number to be determined, we'd love to have you! Please complete the short volunteer request no later than Friday, March 31, 2023. There is no limit to the number of volunteers who can participate. Music will be provided in advance of the conference and a practice session will be held on the afternoon of June 29, prior to the Opening. Make some music and memories with your colleagues!
