NEWS FROM NASFAA

At a July 16, 2024 Board meeting, NASFAA’s Board of Directors approved the Presidential Search Committee (PSC) which will be responsible for finding NASFAA’s next permanent President & CEO. NASFAA’s Diversity Officer, Dr. Sharon Oliver, will chair the committee.

Following multiple legal challenges, a federal appeals court on Thursday temporarily blocked the Department of Education (ED) from fully implementing its new income-driven repayment plan, the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan.

NASFAA is pleased to share a draft of its response to the Department of Education’s (ED) request for comments on its Master Promissory Note (MPN) form. NASFAA focuses largely on the request to update the name of the form with terms that are more easily understood by borrowers as well as align with the term used for other paperwork that outlines a borrower's agreement to repay their loans. NASFAA hopes our members will use these comments to inform their own comments, which are due to ED on July 29, 2024.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Scenario: The FAFSA contributor (student, student spouse, parent, or parent spouse) receives IRS Response Code 214 indicating that, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), they did not file a tax return. However, the contributor self-reports they "did or will file" an IRS Form 1040 or 1040-NR and manually enters tax information, including adjusted gross income (AGI), income earned from work (earned income), taxes paid, etc. The contributor would be a U.S. tax filer and not a foreign tax filer. With the annual conference now behind us, NASFAA is looking forward to next year's national conference in Anaheim, California. The 2024 National Conference Program Task Force will focus on developing the program for the 2025 National Conference to be held June 24-27, 2025.  As a member of this task force, you will be required to attend an in-person meeting in Washington, D.C. in late fall to review session proposals and help craft the conference program; however, attendance at the conference in June is not required. If this sounds like an opportunity that you would be interested in, please review the task force charter on the volunteer information page and complete the volunteer form by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, August 9, 2024.
