The Department of Education (ED) on Monday gave another update on its first round of beta testing for the 2025-26 FAFSA, with the form becoming available to hundreds of students on Tuesday. 

The deadline to apply for the Fresh Start program has been extended to Wednesday, October 2, at 3 a.m. ET due to technical issues with the website, Education Under Secretary James Kvaal confirmed on Monday. The Fresh Start program is a one-time, temporary program from the Department of Education (ED) which offers special benefits for borrowers with defaulted federal student loans, including restoring access to federal student aid. NASFAA has shared more information on the Fresh Start program, along with other best practices that colleges and universities can use to inform student loan borrowers.
