NEWS FROM NASFAA

The Biden administration has made student loan debt relief a focus of its education policy agenda, seeking to ease the financial burden of student loan debt for millions of borrowers. From an ambitious plan for large-scale debt cancellation to targeted relief programs like the SAVE plan, President Joe Biden has attempted to overhaul a system that has disproportionately impacted low- and middle-income Americans.

To help members keep track of the many moving parts related to student loan debt relief and income-drive repayment programs, we have created a student loan relief timeline, which will be updated as new developments arise. Stay tuned to Today's News for more updates and coverage.

As part of Monday’s announcement on the beta testing update, Federal Student Aid (FSA) also highlighted the release of new resources meant to help the financial aid community prepare for the 2025-26 FAFSA cycle. Those resources include a revised Federal Student Aid Estimator, a stand-alone ‘parent wizard’ or contributor tool, and an updated 2025–26 FAFSA prototype to help the community engage in more FAFSA user experience before the form’s official launch date.

Celebrated each year on the third Wednesday in October, Financial Aid Day (FAD) is a special day set aside to celebrate and recognize the contribution of all financial aid professionals across the United States for helping students make their college-going dreams a reality. On FAD colleagues are encouraged to do something special—have an office party, a potluck, a toast, etc.—to celebrate financial aid administrators' contributions to the profession. There are endless ways to celebrate each other, but the most important thing is to have fun and intentionally recognize everyone’s efforts. What is your office doing to celebrate the occasion? Send your stories and pictures to [email protected] or share them on social media and tag NASFAA.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have highlighted the critical need for comprehensive support systems on college campuses. With food insecurity affecting more than 47 million Americans, it’s clear more must be done to address hunger and provide essential food assistance. To tackle these challenges EdTrust, TICAS, and SHEEO will host a webinar, on Wednesday October 16 at 2 p.m. ET, featuring GAO to support the 4 million college students experiencing food insecurity to get SNAP benefits. Learn more about this webinar and reserve your seat today.
