On February 14, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) updated the gender question on the online FAFSA to read, "What is the student’s sex?" The only options are "Male" or "Female." There is no "Non-binary" or "Prefer not to answer" option. Per ED, the FAFSA Simplification Act requires students to respond to this question to complete and submit a FAFSA—meaning the student must choose one and answer the question. Instructions on how to answer the question were not given, so the student will need to decide on his or her own how to answer the question. View the full answer to this question to learn more.
