Just one week after being sworn into office, Education Secretary Linda McMahon announced late on Tuesday that the Department of Education (ED) plans to lay off nearly 50% of its staff across all divisions as part of a “significant” reorganization aimed at improving efficiency and accountability.
After President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Education (ED) to revise Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility on Friday, ED posted on Monday that it is reviewing the executive order. “The PSLF Program is not changing today, and borrowers do not need to take any action,” ED wrote on X and LinkedIn. The executive order specifically directs ED and the Treasury Department to propose regulatory changes to ensure that the definition of “public service” excludes organizations engaged in what the administration considers to be a “substantial illegal purpose.” Stay tuned to Today’s News for more updates on this executive order.
Congressional leaders are still facing the prospect of a government shutdown set to begin at the end of the day on March 14, with spending negotiations hitting significant complications in the Senate. Meanwhile, the House is expected to begin its recess after advancing a spending bill, which appears unlikely to garner the necessary bipartisan support to clear the Senate.
