NEWS FROM NASFAA

A coalition of 20 Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit on Thursday against the Department of Education (ED) and President Donald Trump, seeking to block the administration’s latest plan to lay off nearly half of ED’s workforce. And late on Thursday night, a federal judge ruled in favor of the 20 states, ordering the Trump administration to reinstate thousands of fired probationary federal workers – including those at ED.

The Senate passed a continuing resolution (CR) on Friday evening that will fund the federal government until September 30, narrowly avoiding a government shutdown. President Donald Trump signed the legislation into law on Saturday.

The Department of Education (ED) on Friday announced that its Office of Civil Rights opened investigations into over 50 institutions under Title VI. Specifically, ED is investigating 45 institutions for allegedly “engaging in race-exclusionary practices” in their graduate programs. ED is also investigating six institutions for allegedly awarding race-based scholarships, and one institution for allegedly administering a program that segregates students on the basis of race. A complete list of the institutions is listed in a press release. This announcement comes after ED released a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) in February which told institutions to cease using "racial preferences" in admissions, financial aid, hiring, and other areas, or be at risk of losing federal funding.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Family size is based on federal tax information (FTI) retrieved from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) via the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange (FA-DDX). This means the number of dependents in the family size is now based on the number of individuals who are claimed as dependents on either the student’s (if independent) or parent’s (if dependent) U.S. federal tax return. Family size from the IRS includes the tax filers plus the dependents claimed on the tax return. View the full answer to this question to learn more.
