NASFAA is pleased to share its comments on the 2026-27 FAFSA. In this first round of comments, NASFAA praised ED for resuming its standard FAFSA schedule including two rounds of public comments and a planned October 1 release. NASFAA made several question-specific suggestions, and also urged ED to fully operationalize the FAFSA Simplification Act by ensuring applicants with contributors who don’t have a Social Security Number can use the FA-DDX process.
Scenario: The student was homeless after the July 1 date specified in the FAFSA question -- "At any time on or after July 1, 20xx, was the student unaccompanied and either (1) homeless or (2) self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?" He received a determination from his high school liaison but is now living in an apartment with his mother. He is asking our office how to respond to the student homelessness question on the FAFSA. View the full answer to this scenario to learn more.
