NEWS FROM NASFAA

After the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) sued the Department of Education (ED) for blocking borrowers' progress toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) by removing the online application for income-driven repayment (IDR) plans, the two parties on Friday agreed on a plan to pause the lawsuit from further litigation.

NASFAA has updated its Compiled Higher Education Act (HEA) Reauthorization Recommendations and HEA Reauthorization Priorities. The last comprehensive reauthorization of the HEA occurred in 2008, and since that time, several of NASFAA’s HEA recommendations have already been accomplished. While the HEA continues to be modernized, through a variety of legislative initiatives, the new 119th Congress has the opportunity to embark on a long-overdue reauthorization. NASFAA encourages Congress to continue to work in earnest on an HEA reauthorization and has provided updated policy recommendations that address the evolving higher education landscape.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Scenario: The student put the wrong Social Security Number (SSN) on his paper FAFSA. He has since submitted a correction, and the correct SSN is now visible on the FAFSA. However, the FAFSA Processing System (FPS) has not rerun the database match with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) still contains a reject code (006 in this scenario). View the full answer to this question to learn more.
