NEWS FROM NASFAA

The House Education & Workforce Committee on Monday released its portion of the reconciliation bill, which proposes several extensive changes to Department of Education (ED) programs and initiatives — including the federal Pell Grant program, federal student loan system, need analysis, and more.

NASFAA is pleased to share its draft comments on regulations that would streamline current federal student financial assistance programs. In this first round of comments, NASFAA strongly urged ED not to narrow the definition of qualifying employers for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), emphasizing the need for program stability and fairness for borrowers relying on the current rules. NASFAA also stressed that any approach to Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans must retain core principles of affordability and eventual loan forgiveness, while supporting simplification efforts. NASFAA hopes our members will use these comments to inform their own comments, which are due May 5, 2025.

As part of March’s Advocacy Pipeline, NASFAA hosted members for virtual meetings with congressional staffers from South Dakota. During those meetings, our pipeline participant focused on the need to increase the federal annual and aggregate loan limits, campus-based aid programs, and the FAFSA.
