NEWS FROM NASFAA

In light of the changes resulting from the FUTURE Act and the FAFSA Simplification Act, NASFAA was interested in examining how entities that previously relied on FAFSA data are adapting to the new data-sharing rules and what new processes they have found to meet their needs. NASFAA partnered with a group of higher education-focused organizations to develop a pair of reports – Research Responses to FAFSA Reform and FTI Data and Perspectives on Implications of Statutory Changes to Data-Sharing Rules –  to provide background information and perspectives on how federal regulatory changes have impacted FAFSA data.

The Department of Education (ED) on Wednesday announced several initiatives to combat alleged fraud in Federal Student Aid (FSA) after an analysis found nearly $90 million in student aid was disbursed to ineligible recipients, according to the department.

The Department of Education (ED) on Tuesday announced via an electronic announcement that it is extending the flexibilities for late disbursements to all students who filed a 2024-25 FAFSA – both online and the paper version – and who are or were impacted by a known issue that prevented an official Student Aid Index (SAI) from being calculated by the FAFSA Processing System (FPS) before the student ceased enrollment. A list of these known issues can be found in ED’s Technical Frequently Asked Questions and Known Issues Guide. ED noted that the extension of these flexibilities does not count for issues that may have arisen at an institution, such as issues with financial aid management systems or internal administrative delays.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Launching and sustaining a Prison Education Program (PEP) requires more than just collaboration with the financial aid office — though that's often where the process begins. In this dynamic webinar, today at 2 p.m. ET, we'll spotlight the often-overlooked — but absolutely critical — roles of the admissions office and the registrar's office. Join representatives from AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers) and NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling), along with NASFAA, as we explore how these partnerships can empower your institution to build a more effective, collaborative, and sustainable PEP.

As a friendly reminder, this Friday, May 30, is the last day to cancel your NASFAA 2025 National Conference registration. If you need to cancel your conference registration or change the attendee for your institution, complete the Conference Cancellation & Change of Attendee Form. If you do not cancel your registration by 5:00 p.m. ET on May 30, you will be responsible for the full amount of the registration fees and will be billed. If you cancel your conference registration, don't forget to cancel your hotel reservation, too.

Blue Icon Advisors' upcoming Let's Talk session, on Thursday June 12, will talk about effective strategies for staying alert and responding quickly to potential fraud. Check the schedule for additional upcoming topics and be sure to register for this upcoming session.
