Prior-Prior Year Implementation Timeline

The Early FAFSA, a White House initiative intending to streamline the financial aid application process for families and increase access to higher education, will be available October 1, 2016, for the 2017-18 processing cycle. Applicants completing the 2017-18 FAFSA must provide income data from two years prior to the academic year, otherwise known as prior-prior year (PPY). These changes provide both opportunities and challenges for institutions that extend beyond the Financial Aid Office. Using PPY income information on the FAFSA (as opposed to one-year prior income information) will increase accuracy and will give families an earlier and more accurate idea of their anticipated financial aid and college costs. This document is intended to help institutions review their current timeline and develop their timelines, with this new change for the 2017-18 year.
