NASFAA Comments on Loan Program NPRM

NASFAA on August 28, 2013, submitted comments on the Department of Education’s (ED) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that addresses loan issues. This NPRM is the second of two NPRMs released as a result of negotiated rulemaking that took place in early 2012.

College Costs Surge 500% In U.S. Since 1985: Chart Of The Day

"[T]uition expenses have increased 538 percent in the 28-year period, compared with a 286 percent jump in medical costs and a 121 percent gain in the consumer price index," Bloomberg reports.

Justice Dept. Opens Investigation Of Online Program At Tiffin U.

"A civil division of the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Tiffin University and Altius Education Inc. to determine if Ivy Bridge College—an online college they ran under a joint venture—violated federal student-aid rules," The Chronicle of Higher Education reports.

Student Loan Debtor's Case Remanded For Loan-By-Loan Undue Hardship Analysis

"A bankruptcy court's determination that a Chapter 7 debtor's student loans were not an undue burden was clearly erroneous, the U.S. Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Eighth Circuit held Aug. 21," Bloomberg Law reports.

Government Advocate: 33 Million Workers Qualify To Have Student Loans Forgiven, Too Few Do

"The government's consumer advocate says more than 33 million workers qualify to have their student loans forgiven because they work at schools and hospitals, in military and police uniforms. But the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says the system is overly complicated and often confusing," The Associated Press reports.

Remembering MASFAA Past-President Jim Bauer

NASFAA expresses sincerest condolences to the family of MASFAA Past-President (1992-93) Jim Bauer. Bauer, senior associate dean of enrollment management and executive director of the Office of Financial Assistance Services at the University of Miami, recently lost his battle with cancer and is survived by his wife Lois and three daughters. A statement was issued by University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala.
