Pop Quiz – Can a Student Be Paid for Repeating This Course?

Question:

A student received a D+ in a course. The student would like to take it over to receive a higher grade in the class. Is the student still eligible to receive federal financial aid for repeating the course?

Answer:

Yes, but only once after receiving a passing grade. It is NASFAA's understanding, based on our Training and Regulatory Assistance staff's collective reading of the preambles to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) and Final Rules, as well as informal discussions with Department of Education (ED) officials, that ED considers a "D" grade to be a passing grade.
