Meet Donise Banks. As a first-time college graduate in her family and financial aid recipient, Donise closely relates to the students and families she serves who come from different backgrounds. Learn more about Donise and her career in financial aid in this brief Q&A.

NASFAA and the HEA Group have published a new issue brief, exploring the extent to which college completion impacts student loan repayment. Among the findings: those who did not complete college now collectively owe $918 million more than they borrowed in the first place. In the brief, author Michael Itzkowitz specifically looks at the Department of Education's (ED) College Scorecard data four years after students enter repayment to see if there are differences between those who completed college and those who did not. Learn more and be sure to download the brief.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Scenario: Our school's academic year goes from August 15 through May 15 with a winter break from December 15 through January 15. Students do not attend any classes during this break. We are unsure whether we should use an 8-month cost of attendance (COA) or a 9-month COA. We also have breaks, like fall break and spring break, within standard term payment periods. Answer: As a general rule, an institution may not include in a student’s COA expenses for periods of nonattendance; however, there are limited exceptions. At this year's Leadership & Legislative Conference & Expo, attendees will attend one of four pathways designed to help NASFAA members grow and develop their management and leadership skills, succeed in their roles at the state, regional, or national level, and enhance their enrollment management efforts. Keep an eye on Today’s News in the coming days for coverage of the conference, and connect with us on social media using #NASFAALeads24.
