ED Requests Comments on NSLDS Reporting

Earlier this month, the Department of Education (ED) solicited public comment regarding data collection and reporting through the National Student Loan Database System (NSLDS).

ED is most interested in comments addressing the following:

  • Is this collection necessary to the proper functions of ED?

  • Will this information be processed and used in a timely manner?

  • Is the estimate of burden accurate?

  • How might ED enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected?

  • How might ED minimize the burden of this collection on the respondents, including through the use of information technology?

NSLDS collects information regarding loans borrowed through the Perkins Loan, Federal Family Education Loan, and Direct Loan programs from servicers and guarantors, as well as data on recipients of grant programs including, the Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)/Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, and Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant programs from The Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System.

It is ED's hope that comments received about the NSLDS system will enable ED to better assess its processes in an effort to reduce administrative burden, as well as improve transparency of its data collection systems.

Schools are welcome to comment on the reporting process for themselves, or about the processes for any of the other reporting parties, such as loan servicers or ED systems. Comments should be submitted electronically through the Federal eRulemaking Portal by selecting Docket ID number ED–2019–ICCD–0057. In addition, please submit a copy of your comments to NASFAA so that we can represent the interests and concerns of our member institutions.

Comments are due by July 5, 2019.
