Biden Signs FY 2022 Budget Into Law, With Increases for Pell Grants and Student Aid Funding

President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed Congress’ massive fiscal year 2022 spending bill into law, which contains $24.6 billion for federal student aid programs, and includes a $400 increase to the maximum Pell Grant award, bringing the total to $6,895 for the 2022-23 award year.
Congress flirted with its most recent expiration of a short-term spending extension to keep the government operational and ultimately cleared its wide ranging $1.5 trillion package well before the March 11 midnight deadline, as the Senate passed the spending bill Thursday evening.

The legislation contains a host of provisions within the legislative text concerning campus-based aid programs, increases in federal student aid funding, and more federal higher education programs. In addition, NASFAA has provided coverage of several changes to the FAFSA Simplification Act that Congress made through the spending law.
Since the annual appropriations process has faced significant delays this cycle, the work on the fiscal year 2023 spending levels is expected to start in earnest within the coming weeks as Congress faces its annual October 1 budgeting deadline.
