NEWS FROM NASFAA

Federal Student Aid (FSA) on Tuesday released newly updated data from 70 quarterly application, disbursement, and loan portfolio reports, showing a 1.3 million uptick in the number of borrowers in default since the last quarter in 2025.

The Department of Education (ED) announced that it will host an in-person summit on Tuesday, July 7, at the department’s LBJ Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The one-day summit will feature staff from ED and Federal Student Aid, Inspectors General, institutions of higher education, and industry partners for panels and sessions focused on combating fraud across higher education. ED released an FAQ addressing questions on who should attend from each institution, how many in-person attendees are allowed per institution, and more. ED noted that a virtual attendance option may be offered closer to the summit date, but is not guaranteed. Registration must be completed by July 3.

NASFAA continues to refine its aid offer models to promote transparency and consistency in how financial aid information is communicated to students and families. These updated models continue to meet all current NASFAA Code of Conduct requirements while also reflecting recent policy developments, including changes enacted through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (effective July 1, 2026) and NASFAA's endorsement of the Improving Financial Aid Offers for Students Act. The aid offer examples have been updated to provide institutions with non-mandated, practical models for clearly communicating financial aid eligibility and costs using current terminology, disclosures, and best practices.
