NEWS FROM NASFAA

Recent overhauls to the federal student aid system are taking place just as students begin to arrive on campus, requiring financial aid administrators to once again carry out sweeping changes after delayed, missing, or even conflicting guidance from the Department of Education (ED). “Every day, [financial aid professionals] translate complex federal policy into practical guidance, helping students understand their options and make informed decisions to find a path forward—and they need the staffing, technology, training and institutional support to do that work effectively. Just as importantly, financial aid leaders should have a seat at the table when institutional decisions are made,” NASFAA President & CEO Melanie Storey writes in an op-ed with ACE President Ted Mitchell. “This is why supporting financial aid offices should not be viewed as an operational expense but as a student success strategy.” Read the full op-ed on Inside Higher Ed.

Compiled by NASFAA's Policy Team, this new web page is dedicated to tracking litigation that affects federal student aid, financial aid administration, and higher education policy. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Monday introduced a new bill that would prohibit the government from garnishing Social Security benefits to collect defaulted federal student loan debt from seniors and individuals with disabilities.
