H.R.654/S.183 — Students Helping Young Students Act of 2023

NASFAA Summary & Analysis: This bill would amend the HEA to include a work-study program for off-campus community service at certain after-school activities. Institutions will need to use the funds granted to them to compensate students employed in the after-school activities of eligible schools. This compensation may be for the time spent in training or for the travel directly related to the after-school activities. ED will have 180 days after the enactment of this bill to reach out to eligible institutions and inform them of this new work-study program. This bill calls for institutions to prioritize their community service and after-school activities at eligible schools that serve low-income communities.
