The Department of Education (ED) negotiated rulemaking subcommittee on prison education programs (PEP) on Tuesday continued reviewing ED’s amendatory text for PEPs, again focusing on key definitions of the program and sorting through any remaining hangups. The subcommittee continued to work together to finalize language that will be presented as recommendations to the full committee. While the committee has a number of definitions that it is still sorting through, negotiators are expected to be in communication prior to the final day’s session in order to further amend proposed language.

The Department of Education (ED) this week issued guidance to financial aid administrators on awarding Title IV aid to student athletes who have received compensation under name, image, and likeness (NIL) contracts. In a Dear Colleague Letter, ED detailed how it will treat student athlete compensation following a landmark Supreme Court ruling that prompted an interim policy change from the NCAA that opened the door for student athletes to receive compensation for NIL.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA Office Closed Thursday in Observance of Veterans Day

The NASFAA office will be closed on Thursday, November 11 in observance of the Veterans Day federal holiday. The NASFAA website and other online services will still be available, but NASFAA's Today's News will not be sent and technical and membership support will not be available until the office reopens on Friday, November 12.

We need your great ideas for engaging, relevant, and interesting conference sessions. All types of session proposals are welcome, from those focused on advocacy, training, and professional development, to sessions structured as open-forum discussions. We urge you to construct your session proposal with an eye toward inclusion, ensuring speakers from all different backgrounds — particularly those from marginalized groups — are represented.
