NEWS FROM NASFAA

In an effort to improve the clarity and consistency of student financial aid offers, NASFAA — along with 10 higher education associations representing college presidents, financial aid offices, enrollment managers, and admissions counselors — today launched a task force with the goal of creating a set of principles and standards about what information should be included in institutional aid offers so the resulting documents are clear, meet high standards of transparency, and contain consumer friendly information, while still allowing for institutional customization.

A school has seen an increase in students with the 359 comment code for unusual enrollment history (UEH). Do you know why we are seeing an increase and how do we resolve this comment code? Think you know the answer? Read on to see if you got it right!

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA is sponsoring a community experience for all member institutions attending the 2022 Federal Student Aid Training Conference. Though the conference is virtual, we hope to provide a space for members to learn, connect, and engage about the material being shared by the Department of Education. If you are interested in joining this online learning community, please fill out the community interest form.

The wait is over — NASFAA's Tax Transcript Decoder, updated for the 2023-24 award year, is now available. This visual guide can help the financial aid office quickly identify the correct tax transcript and tax return line items needed to complete the verification process. The Tax Transcript Decoder contains a color-coded sample 2021 IRS Form 1040 tax return and the corresponding tax return transcript. The Decoder also includes a sample Form W-2, cross-referenced with a W-2 Wage and Tax Statement, and information to help determine whether an individual filed Schedules 1, 2, and/or 3 for 2021. Take a look at the updated guide, and share with your colleagues.

Every year, NASFAA recognizes outstanding members and other higher education stakeholders for their achievements and contributions to financial aid, students, and/or NASFAA. Nominate your colleagues for awards such as the Gold Star Award, the Robert P. Huff Golden Quill Award, and the Allan W. Purdy Distinguished Service Award, among others. Award winners will be announced this summer at the NASFAA 2023 national conference in San Diego, Calif. Nominations are due Feb. 10, 2023 — submit yours today!
