NEWS FROM NASFAA

Celena Tulloss, FAAC® Photo

With the Federal Work-Study Task Force’s work now under way, chair Celena Tulloss, FAAC®, spoke with NASFAA about the task force’s upcoming plans. The purpose of the Federal Work-Study Task Force is to examine what changes — especially given the temporary nature of Federal Work-Study (FWS) flexibilities — schools implemented during the pandemic to their FWS programs, what challenges they are facing now as they look at transitioning the program back to the original regulations, and what flexibilities may be needed for this program to be successful into the future. Task force members will also research the best practices that schools are using in utilizing FWS students.

This interactive webinar, on Wednesday, January 18, at 2 p.m. ET, will focus on the two pending U.S. Supreme Court cases — SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA vs. UNC — which challenge the legitimacy of race-conscious admission policies and seek to overturn decades of federal court precedent. While most of the attention in those cases centers on issues of admission policy and practice, important issues in those cases may bear on the continuing role of race and ethnicity in the awarding of financial aid and scholarships. This webinar will distill the legal issues of consequence for aid and scholarship practitioners, offer insights regarding court decision-readiness strategies and steps to consider, and virtually engage with attendees to address their questions.
