NEWS FROM NASFAA

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Gerald "Jerry” Bird, who served for 35 years in the financial aid profession, including as president of the Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (SASFAA) and national chair of NASFAA.

NASFAA on Monday submitted comments to the Department of Education (ED) on its proposed information collection for student work-study earnings. NASFAA questioned ED’s decision to require 95 new data fields when Congress only required ED to ask institutions for one data element — students’ annual work-study earnings — as part of FAFSA simplification efforts, noting the broad overreach of ED’s proposal. NASFAA also challenged ED’s inclusion of individual student Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) reporting for future years, given that ED provided no justification for why it needed this information.
